Man Food…Chili Cheese Dog Casserole

 
This post has been a long time coming.  My husband has been asking me–okay, more like begging me- to make this Chili Cheese Dog Casserole ever since I told him about it, oh I don’t know six or so months ago.  It’s a hearty, beefy, manly casserole. If Chili Cheese Hot Dogs aren’t your thing, then this casserole probably isn’t for you.   
 
We had friends over to watch some of the March Madness basketball games last week and it was the perfect man food for the occasion. 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
A roommate of mine used to make this casserole for church Potlucks.   I didn’t think people would touch it, but it got devoured every time she made it.  And although it’s not a typical meal for Brett and I, we both liked it.  Actually, Brett loved it.  He said it was the best splurge he’d had in a while.
 
 

My roommate always used canned chili, but I made my own using ground turkey, which made us feel just a teeny bit better about eating this meal. 

 
 

 
No surprise here, the little man loved it too.  
 
 
Chili Cheese Dog Casserole
 
Ingredients
8 hot dog buns, torn into pieces
8 beef hot dogs, cut into round slices
1 1/2  cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 lb. lean ground beef or turkey burger
1 (16oz) can Chili Beans
1 (8oz) can Tomato sauce
1 (15 oz) can diced tomatoes
1 packet Taco seasoning
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350.
Cook turkey burger or lean ground beef until meat is browned and cooked through; drain. Stir in chili beans, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, taco seasoning mix, and 1/4 c. of cheese.  Let simmer for a couple of minutes then remove from heat and set aside.
Spray a 9 x 13 in pan with Pam.  Lay the hot dog bun pieces across the bottom of the pan.
Layer the hot dog slices on top, covering the bun pieces.
Pour the Chili over the top of the hot dog slices and cover with remaining shredded cheese.
Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes, removing foil for the last 10 minutes.
Serve with mustard on top.
***if you don’t want to make your own Chili you can use 2 (15oz) cans of your favorite canned Chili.

  3. I remember as a kid when my mom made hot dogs, I would tear my bun into pieces, smother it with chili, and cut up my hot dog to go on top. Then I would squirt ketchup and mustard all over it. It would gross my brothers out, but I loved it!!! :)

  5. I think this looks terrible…which means my husband would probably love it. Maybe I’ll make it for him sometime when I’m not actually eating at home (I’m not a fan of chili dogs).

  7. Kristy..I had to come tell you that this recipe just save the day!!! I had made it a couple of weeks ago for just me and the husband cause he loves it when I whip up a new dish. It was a hit then and once again was a hit tonight. Reason being, a family friend needed an overnight babysitter asap today for her 11 yo daughter. So as we were having the “what’s for dinner ideas discussion”, I mentioned this casserole, she lit up and said that sounds good. After making a quick store trip, in it went to the oven and out came the quick and simple yummyoliciousness. Even the husband raved again about it! So thanks for inventing this dish.

  10. Your recipe sounds good.I also make a chili dog casserole. Instead of using buns.I put fried hashbrowms in the bottom of the dish first then the chili & dogs& cheese.My family loves it.I’ll try yours, please try mine?pmccloskey54@yahoo.com

  11. I’ve been making this for quite a while, now, except that I use tater tots, instead of bread. My husband loves to dip tortilla chips in it.

  12. Sounds very yummy, and all foods my kids will eat. I showed this to my hubby and he said he would like to try it with his favorite canned chili, if I do this do I warm the chili up according to directions then put it on top of hot dogs, or do I just add the can of chili unheated to the top and let it cook in oven? Sorry new to cooking so want to make sure I’m doing it correctly?

  13. Thank you for sharing, this sounds yummy and all things my kids will eat. Hubby wants me to try it with his favorite canned chili, if I use canned chili Do I heat it up according to the directions on can first then add it to the casserole or do I add it unheated and let it cook while it is in the oven?
