Slow Cooker Sausage, Apple & Sage Stuffing

I have a fear of cooking Thanksgiving dinner.  I can handle a few sides and a dessert, but doing it all? Plus the turkey? I’m out.

When the day comes that I’m forced to do it all on my own I might just have a heart attack.  Making sure everything comes together perfectly, timing everything just right from start to finish, and serving a perfectly juicy and tender turkey….all under the pressure of guests?  I’m not sure I can handle it. By then I better at least have a double oven!

I’m lucking out this year and we are heading to Brett’s Aunt’s house to have dinner with relatives, so I get to bring a side or two or a dessert.  Whew!

Any guesses on what my favorite Thanksgiving dish is……

The stuffin’ of course! It is Thanksgiving dinner for me.  I love it.  And stuff my face with it. This Sausage, Apple & Sage Stuffing is where’s it at- savory, sweet, moist with a little crunch on the edges. Perfection.  I love the addition of sausage (ooh, spicy sausage would be good too!) and sweet chunks of apples.  Mmm, mmm, mmm.

What other slow cooker Thanksgiving recipes are out there that I need???  You know, for that one day I have to do it all and my slow cooker comes to the rescue. 
 
 
 
Slow Cooker Sausage, Apple & Sage Stuffing
 
Ingredients
12 cups dried bread cubes
8 ounces ground pork or turkey sausage (I used turkey)
4 tbs butter, melted
1 1/2 cups Granny Smith green apples, chopped (no need to peel)
1 1/2 cups chopped onion
1 1/2 cups chopped celery
2 tsp finely chopped fresh sage
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1/2 cup chicken broth plus 1/4 cup if desired
Instructions
Brown the sausage, drain and place in the bottom of a (6qt or larger) slow cooker.  Stir in the bread crumbs.  Pour in melted butter toss toss together with sausage and breadcrumbs.
Place chopped apples, onion, celery, sage, salt and pepper over sausage and breadcrumbs, pour in chicken broth and toss everything together using two large spoons.
Cover and cook on high for 2-3 hours or until the bread is browned on top and vegetables are tender.   Before serving you can stir in 1/4 cup extra broth if desired for extra moisture.

  6. The crockpot burned the stuffing after only two hours. I had to throw half of it away. Maybe some crockpots need to be on the low setting. And maybe the stuffing needs more broth to be on the high setting

    • Oh no! I definitely think each crock pot is different so you definitely have to keep a close eye. My crock pot tend to be on the hotter side but still didnt burn. I’ll make a note in the recipe to watch it, and add more broth as needed. Thanks for the feedback–hope this didnt ruin Thanksgiving dinner… The stuffing is the best part!

    I’m not sure if you want to specify what type of bread crumbs, because I used playing bread crumbs but the stuffing never formed well- way way way too crumbly! I ended up adding probably at least 2 more cups of broth to try to get it to form and also an egg to see if that would help, but it still was very very crumbly. I’m wondering what I did wrong? I followed everything else…

  9. I’m going to make this for the first time this Thanksgiving. Do you have any tips or suggestions that you’ve learned through trial and error?
    I plan to do the prep work and combined it the day before.
    I will cook in the slow cooker on Thanksgiving morning.
    How many servings does this make approximately?

    • Serves about 8. And I would just watch it and make sure it doesn’t dry out too quickly, every crock pot can cook differently! Add a little more water if you think it is drying out too fast!

  10. 12 cups of breadcrumbs? Not bread cubes correct? First time cooking stuffing so just want to make sure! Thanks!

    • It’s bread cubes! Just fixed it! Thanks for checking, I would have felt awful if you used breadcrumbs!!!

      • Crap, I read the breadcrumbs before you changed it and already had started it. Is there any way to fix it since I used 12 cups bread crumbs and not cubes? I added basically a whole thing of chicken broth to get some moisture into it….. :(

        • When you say bread crumbs what do you mean? I immediately thought like panko italian bread crumbs, that would never work. Maybe add some of the rest of the ingredients to even out the ratios?
